A Quick Look at Three Variations of Baccarat
We'll take a look at three variations of Baccarat namely Punto Banco, Chemin de Fer, and Baccarat Banque. We'll point out observable differences in game play so you'll be able to distinguish which variation is being played when you see one.
The first variation of Baccarat we'll look at is called Punto Banco. Traditionally, this variation is played on a table that is oval in shape. Punto Banco is usually played using cards of six decks or eight decks. Normally, only the dealers and the croupier get to shuffle the cards. The cards will be dealt first to the players and after which the banker will be dealt cards.
Everyone on the Punto Banco table will initially play a couple of cards for a starting hand. The banker also gets a pair of cards in this variation of Baccarat. The total value of the cards of each hand will be made and the croupier calls it out. Rules on table play will then be used to figure out if additional cards will be needed.
Chemin de Fer, another variation of Baccarat, uses a total of six decks. You'll find a basket at the center of the Chemin de Fer table to hold the used cards. The croupier gets to shuffle the cards in Chemin de Fer. After which, players are also given the right to shuffle the cards. The croupier then takes the cards and lays them in front. The croupier then takes a bunch of cards and the player on the croupier's right plays the role of banker for the mean time and the other players take the role of punters.
The banker in this variation then deals out two cards each for punters and the banker (i.e. himself). Punters can say "Banco" and play against the banker. The points are then summed up and the winners are paid. If the banker wins he has the option to deal again or let someone else take the role.
Our last variation is called Baccarat Banque. The role of banker will be a bit more permanent in this variation of Baccarat. This variation will usually use three decks to play the game. In this variation, the banker will risk a larger amount of money and will stay until all cards from the shoe are dealt. The exception to this rule is if the banker retires or loses. If the banker retires an obligation to declare an amount to retire on is taken. Another player can then take up the role in this variation.
These are our three variations of Baccarat. Knowing the difference helps you appreciate the variety each would give.
